Shoe fastenings refer to the mechanisms or methods used to secure shoes onto the feet. Unlike slip-on style of footwear, shoes with proper fastening ensure that the shoes are fitted securely to the wearer's feet, preventing the feet from slipping off the shoes and causing trips and falls. At Two Little Feet, we strongly encourage the use of shoes with ankle fastener for little ones to ensure safety and also healthy feet. 

There are several types of shoe fastenings, each offering unique benefits and styles. Let's find out the common shoes fastenings and what are available at Two Little Feet's baby and kids shoes.

Laces Fastening

Laces are one of the most traditional and versatile shoe fastenings. They involve threading laces through eyelets or hooks and tying them to secure the shoe snugly around the foot. This type of fastening is common in athletic shoes, casual shoes, and some dress shoes.

• Pros: Offers customisable fit, allowing for adjustments to accommodate different foot shapes and sizes. Provides even pressure distribution across the foot. Classic and versatile aesthetic. Can be easily replaced if damaged.
• Cons: Require time and effort to tie and untie. Can become untied during wear if not secured properly. Laces may wear out over time and need replacement.

Due to the complication of using laces, our children shoes do not come with this type of fastening. However, most of our shoes come with elastic laces that make the footwear more adjustable.

Hook and Loop Fastening

Hook and Loop system is a convenient fastening that involves attaching two strips of fabric, one with tiny hooks and the other with tiny loops, to create a secure closure. Also more commonly known as Velcro straps, Hook and Loop is popular in children's shoes and some athletic shoes for their ease of use.

• Pros: Quick and easy to fasten and unfasten, making them ideal for children and individuals with limited dexterity. Provides adjustable fit. Offers a secure closure without the need for tying.
• Cons: Hook and loop closures may wear out over time and lose their effectiveness. Can collect dirt and debris, affecting longevity. May not provide as precise a fit as laces.

Most of our baby and kids shoes come with Hook and Loop fastening as this is easier to put on and take off for wiggly little feet. Also, children can learn better motor skills by securing their own footwear using hook and loop system.

Buckles Fastening

Buckles are typically made of metal and are commonly found on dress shoes, sandals, and some casual shoes. They involve a strap that is threaded through a metal buckle and secured by a pin or prong.

• Pros: Offers a secure and adjustable fit. Adds a stylish element to shoes, particularly dress shoes and sandals. Generally durable and long-lasting.
• Cons: Can be more time-consuming to fasten and unfasten compared to other fastening methods. Buckles may require occasional maintenance to prevent corrosion or breakage.

Similar to laces fastening, buckle fastening needs a more advanced motor skills to so our children shoes do not come with this type of fastening.

Zippers Fastening

Zippers are fastenings that involve interlocking teeth that are pulled together by a slider mechanism. They are commonly found on boots, sneakers, and some dress shoes, providing a quick and easy way to put on and take off shoes.

• Pros: Provides quick and easy on/off functionality. Offers a secure closure. Can be incorporated into various shoe styles.
• Cons: Zippers may snag or break with frequent use. Limited adjustability compared to laces or straps. Can be challenging to repair if damaged.

Bungee Cord Fastening

Bungee cord fastenings involve stretchable cords with toggles or locks that can be adjusted for a custom fit. This type of fastening is often found in athletic shoes and hiking boots, providing a secure and adjustable closure.

• Pros: Offers a secure and adjustable fit with the ability to stretch. Quick and easy to fasten and unfasten. Provides flexibility and comfort.
• Cons: Bungee cords may lose elasticity over time, resulting in a looser fit. Limited adjustability compared to laces. May not offer as secure a closure as laces or straps.

Swivel Button Fastening

• Pros: When properly engaged, can provide a secure and snug closure, ensuring that the shoe stays in place during wear. Depending on the quality of construction, rotating button fasteners can be durable and long-lasting.
